Voice over IP (VoIP) has teetered on the brink of mainstream technology for years -- has it finally arrived as a revenue-generating technology for telecommunications carriers? Many observers believe widespread broadband adoption, advancements in voice quality and ease of use, and the focus on reducing costs has driven the renewed interest in VoIP. The VoIP market is expected to contribute an overall value-added services market of $47 billion by 2009 according to Juniper Research. Juniper added that the challenge for broadband service providers will be to provision the new services as cost effectively as possible as revenues from existing fixed-line voice services decline.

According to Arizona research firm In-Stat/MDR, over 5 million people will subscribe to VoIP services by 2007—five times more than there were in 2002, a trend which could represent a trouble spot or an opportunity for telecommunications companies. How will the coming convergence of Wi-Fi wireless LAN technology and VoIP services affect the marketplace and what opportunities will it provide? How will VoIP impact consumers, network backbone and enterprise customers? What are the top business opportunities for VoIP technology? What are the challenges? What, if anything, does this mean for the business and operational support systems like billing? What should be considered when looking for support systems to maximize the profitability of VoIP services?
